Fear … a real show stopper

Dear Sunrider Business Leader,

As many of you know, in the spring of 2007 I had a horse fall on me in a river. It is interesting the things that go through a person's mind when you are laying on the bottom of a river with a horse on top of you. I remember having my eyes open and could see sunlight and water rushing past.  It is interesting that throughout the whole experience I never felt any fear ... in hindsight I found that odd.

In fact, the first time I felt fear during this whole experience was after surgery and coming out of the fog of morphine, my wife told me how Jared, my 15 year old son, had jumped into the river next to the horse's front legs, grabbed the halter, and twisted its head until the horse flipped over. The momentum carried Jared onto the horse, which was thrashing around. Fortunately, he was able to get off the horse and swim away, only being kicked once by the horse.

My family left and I started thinking about what Jared had done ... and I was struck with intense fear. What the heck was that boy thinking, jumping into a river with a thrashing horse? He could have gotten killed!

Fear is an odd thing. Being under the horse in the water didn't create fear in me, however, knowing the risk of getting in the river with a horse that is down caused intense fear when I found out what Jared had done. If I had been on the shore of the river, I probably wouldn't have let Jared jump in to save me ... fear for Jared's life would have stopped me. Jared on the other hand had only one objective in his mind ... to save my life. He was willing to put his own life on the line to do that ... and he felt no fear.

While I was laying in the hospital bed thinking about this, the fear left me and was replaced by gratitude and love when it occurred to me that Jared's love for his father and not fear of risking own life was his prevailing emotion.

Fear and other negative emotions tend to stop action while love and other positive emotions tend to create action.

What is the Worst Fear?

It seems the worst fear we face is fear of the unknown. What do you suppose would have happened if Jared had taken time to examine the situation? He could have sat on the bank and asked, "What will happen if I jump in? Will my Dad die, will I die? What will be the outcome if I try to flip the horse over? Will I fail?" Each one of these questions is motivated by fear of the unknown. However, Jared ignored all the questions of "what if," he knew what his objective was ... and he did it.

Could he have failed? Yes, in fact it was more likely that he would fail than succeed. I still don't know how he was able to flip that horse over with a saddle on its back. However, he did succeed. If he would have stood on the bank and, in fear, pondered about the unknown future ... he would have most assuredly ... failed.

Fear and My Sunrider Business

Too often our Sunrider business success revolves around our own fears ... and mostly they are fear of the unknown. It has been my experience that when we heed our fear of the unknown and allow it to stop our actions ... the results are always worse than the worst possible thing you think could happen.

  • What if no one wants to do the Sunrider business?
  • What if the Starter Pack is too expensive for them?
  • What if they hate MLM?
  • What if no one duplicates?
  • What if I quit my job to do Sunrider?
  • What if I spend my savings to get my business going?

The list of unknown fears is endless.

In my 1896 dictionary, a fellow by the name of Crabb, who pontificates on such things, said that while things such as being frightened, experiencing something terrible, horrible, or horrid are affected by the senses ... fear is a mental activity. And if it is mental, it can be overcome.

Success and Eliminating Fear of the Unknown

There are certain things you can do to mentally and physically eliminate fear. Here are a few to consider.

  • Create a strong vision or dream of what you want. Creating a strong vision requires a balance of ...
    • Positive emotions such as love, gratitude, a desire to serve yourself and others, joy, appreciation, happiness, hope, optimism, and commitment. All these positive emotions are controlled mentally ... so with effort you can make them the dominate part of your day. Each moment of the day you can chose positive over negative emotions to dominate your life.
    • Correct beliefs. Too often we allow life's negative challenges to build our controlling belief set. This will leave you with a set of false beliefs that are incapable of bringing you success. A belief is something you understand to be true. When you take a correct belief and merge it with hope or the expectation of a future event ... all sorts of wonderful things come into your life.
  • With the combination of positive emotions and correct beliefs, you have the opportunity of visually creating the world you want to physically create. It will happen!
  • Mentally control your fear. When you find yourself standing on the bank of the river looking in, but fear keeps you from jumping, take a moment and think of the most positive thing that could happen ... visualize it, feel it, savor it. THEN JUMP!
  • Have an effective plan. Every plan has to be based on where you are now. For a new distributor it would be impractical to start one month and be a Master Business Leader the next. It is possible ... yes, but not physically likely. So have a plan that gets you where you want to go, but at a speed that fits your circumstances. What do you want to build into your plan?
    • Sell at least two Starter Packs every month. Last month, when I sold two Starter Packs, with the entire bonus available as a Business Leader I made $360.00. That's pretty amazing!
    • Present using effective tools. Sunrider has some of the most effective presentation tools such as the Company Profile and Sunrider, Simply the Best booklet as well as follow up training CDs, DVD, etc. Find what works for you and use it! Don't be swayed to change if what you are doing works.
    • Hold follow up meetings. This is how we built our business in the early years, and in my mind it is still the most effective way to build. It was our goal to be in the homes of our new distributors, no matter where they lived, at least every 30 days. It worked. Yes technology has made it easier to communicate in so many ways, but having the opportunity to sit face to face and build a relationship is the best.
    • Do something to build your business every day. If you don't you won't create enough momentum to grow. Every day contact new people, present Sunrider's financial opportunity and products several times/week. Follow up with your distributors often.

Action will always banish fear. If you fear talking with people ... talk with enough people so that the fear is gone. If presenting is your fear ... present till the fear is gone. If having money causes you fear ... make enough till the fear is gone. Prove to yourself that you can live a life without fear, one that is full of vision, action ... and success.

Having pondered some of these issues under a horse at the bottom of the river, one breath away from being dead ... I guarantee you ... it is worth the effort. Will it be easy? Not necessarily.  Can you do it? Absolutely. I am so grateful Jared opted for action over fear. Treat your life the same.

Sincerely,

Paul Jensen

P.S. I received these stories about VitaFruit today. The first one relates directly to people's mental response to fear of the unknown ... and a solution. Read and enjoy.

Sharing VitaFruit. When I first received this product I had an amazing response. When I used to go do my meetings at people's houses and on the way I could not stop my negative mind chatter. It went something like this. "They probably don't want to spend the money..... they will probably say no...... I am probably wasting my time".... It was all nerves and apprehension and it was always the same tape playing...

Then VitaFruit came out and Glenda said she was drinking it right from the bottle straight....so of course I wanted to try it. I did right before I was going to an appointment. When I was in the car my voice chatter had changed..... I was happily driving with all sorts of positive thoughts. Thinking that the people would be so excited to hear what I had to say!!!!! I couldn't believe what was going on.... It was so dramatic of a change I knew it was the VitaFruit.... It worked every time I drank it to change around my attitude. I wouldn't leave home for an appointment without it.

One day an IBO showed up to a meeting harried and upset. She asked me for a bottle of VitaFruit and bought it, then just sat there and started drinking it right from the bottle within no time her whole demeanor changed and soon she had us all laughing, her happy change of attitude had infected all of us.

I remember when the product first came out.  Glenda was at a meeting with Dr. Chen...he asked her to listen to the ambience in the room.  So she listened to the general room noises and she said...".it seems like there is a lot of laughing" and Chen said IT'S THE VITAFRUIT!
