Listen for Needs, Wants, and Dreams

Dear Sunrider Business Leader,

Some time ago I was working with a group of 14-15 year old scouts including my own son Jared. Each of these young men had been working towards their Eagle rank in the scouting program … but tragically, we as leaders decided for the last year to let them make it on their own … and not much was done, except for Jared who, due to personal drive and his close proximity to me, got his Eagle some time before. I decided that this “wait and see” program wasn’t going to work so I met with each boy, told them where they were, what needed to be done, and set some goals with them. Each success I’ve obtained has been through continual follow up, reminding, getting their parents on their case … and generally … basic harassment. While it is working, it is not working. So the looming question came up as to why? The simple answer was that getting their Eagle rank doesn’t immediately address their current needs, wants, or dreams. At this age, sports, an awakening realization that girls exist, and other items, replaced the dream of Eagle.

So the answer is simple … get a dream out there for them that puts the Eagle rank back in the high position. So I arranged for my neighbor to take all the boys to his cabin the next winter to snowmobile for a couple of days … if they achieve their goal of Eagle rank. All of a sudden the interest level and activity in getting their Eagle rank took a mighty leap forward.

Dreams, Wants, and Needs

When you are sharing Sunrider with your friends and associates … drill it into your mind that it is their needs, wants, and dreams that will bring them into Sunrider, not yours. You must take the time to find out what those interests are and show them how Sunrider can help them fulfill their dreams. How do you find these things out? Show your interest in them by having a conversation where you can ask questions.

On an interesting side note, just the other day, Jared, who is reading the book, How to Win Friends and Influence People said, “Dad, I know why you don’t have many friends.” Not realizing I didn’t have many friends I wanted to know why, so I bit and asked, “And why is that?” He clarified the point by responding, “You’re not interested in other people when you talk, you talk mostly of yourself.” Ouch son, that was just a little too much truth all at once.

Take an inventory of your approach to sharing Sunrider. Are you listening with interest to others needs, wants, and dreams? Are you asking questions for more understanding? Are you focusing on what Sunrider can do for those dreams?

This may be the most important concept for you to master in building your business.

Sincerely,

Paul Jensen
